We're being relocated to So Cal with an 8 yo who's currently attending a gifted program in Chicago. How do we find out about the gifted school options in the south LA County / north Orange County areas?!

If it's North Orange County, you're in luck. OC schools fare better than a lot of districts in the state. We live in North Tustin, which is north OC, and we're part of the Tustin Unified District, considered one of the better districts. We have one school in particular that offers a GATE program that is separate from the basic education classes. It's Tustin Memorial Academy. However, it's a lottery system to get in, so it's not easy. Outside of that, many schools offer GATE (Gifted and Talented) "clusters" or groupings in each grade. Your best best is to peruse the website of each district (Tustin, Orange, Anaheim Union, Irvine) and see what they offer. You could probably start with Orange County Dept. of Education and go from there. There are also some excellent private school choices in north OC.
You'll need to narrow down your real estate choices first because there are quite a few districts in your window. LAUSD is one of the largest school districts in the country, but it stops in LA County. There are plenty of choices in Orange County as well. All of it will depend on your budget.
I can only speak about the LAUSD gifted programs, but they run from gifted magnets (although the magnet application period runs from December to January) to SAS programs (schools within schools), to GATE programs within schools. You'll learn all about them here: sfpc.lausd.k12.ca.us/GATE/intro.html
Also you're welcome to join us in the LAUSD Parents group here on GreatSchools. We have great resources for parents, and if we don't know something, we usually know where to refer you. We're located here: community.greatschools.net/groups/13589
Good luck, and welcome to LA. You'll love the weather :)
