I know this might be a little late, but I am hoping I can still be of help!
I think Barton Hills is a great neighborhood! It is very central and has fantastic schools! It can be a little expensive, but there are definitely some duplexes that are more affordable.
If you are looking for something a little more suburban, travis country is great. Still close to the essential places an VERY family oriented!
I would discourage movine to the round rock area, with gas prices being so high and the traffic being so dense!

I was extremely blessed to be able to get into Barton Creek West neighborhood off of Bee Caves. I got into a house that needed some work and was the least expensive on the market. The neighborhood is very good and children walk to West Ridge Middle school or take an extremely short bus ride. Also, Barton Creek Elementary is right there. There is a neighborhood pool with swim team and a very good pool that has camps, competitive swim teams year round and many pools - West Austin Athletic Club all within less than a mile.

Rosedale if you can afford it and you like and in-town walkable area and upscale grocery. If you want to be where lots of the former yuppies with children are- your typical kid-full suburban neighborhood NW of 183 is good- but traffic is terrible getting to downtown from there. allandale area around NW park is older 50's homes on generous lots with trees. NW District park is a great park to go to, with a pool and pond, playground- though not a s big as its name sounds. Gullet (Gal-let) elem is very good. Neighborhood stable & solid middle class, turning over from older folks to younger familiies gradually.
