out of district school policies, toledo, OH

mollyskickin
Would like to switch from private to public, but our district is less than acceptable for my sone with ADHD and potential other learning disabilities. Where can I go to find a suitable alternative that is tuition free?

It sounds like somebody has done an educational evaluation on your son...was it done by a private psychologist, or ?
I just want to verify, when you say your son operates at preK levels mostly, 4th vocabulary, are you saying 4th grade (advanced) vocabulary, or 4-yr preschool level vocabulary?
For his preK skills, do you mean things like math skills, cutting and printing(occupational/physical abilities), etc?
The more information you can share, the better the resources I can offer you...

He is 6, almost 7, first grade operating at PreK levels mostly, 4th vocabulary. He has been in private schools all along, and since they are not trained in areas of special ed, he has not been officially tested beyond the ADHD. After following the long process of his peds PCP diagnosis, and finding correct dosage, we are just now getting a grip on his ADHD with the help of a good child psychiatrist . My concerns regarding his probable ADHD have existed since preschool. Now am searching for other areas where he may need help to begin to address those, if any. Just dont want him to get so far behind and be paying so much for nothing. Love public schools and all the govt resources available, but district we are in is NOT an option..would rather sell my kidney to keep paying elsewhere!

Hi. Unfortunately, I'm not aware of any schools other than public, and public charter schools, which are tuition free anywhere in the U.S. Parents of kids with ADHD/LDs often find that they have to place their children in a public environment and if inadequate progress is made, only then can they bring denial of FAPE (free, appropriate public education) legal claims against the school district, to seek out-of-district placement at the school's expense. You have to give them an opportunity to try to provide appropriate services, not just assume they won't help your child.

How old is your son/what grade level? When you say he has possible LDs, has he had a comprehensive educational evaluation by the school district, or privately? In any case, I invite you to join the Learning and Attention Difficulties Group at community.greatschools.net/groups/11554
