I'm not familiar with any public schools in your area, but if they really aren't providing FAPE (free, appropriate, public education) and your son is failing to make adequate progress, then I know some parents have successfully brought legal action against the public schools, and gotten out-of-district private school placement paid for. Here's a list of some special ed private schools around the country: community.greatschools.net/groups/11554/discussion/152556
Another Greatschools member, LaShawndra777, who is from Milwaukee, mentioned the following to someone in another discussion, and perhaps it can help you, too:
"Visiting schools and seeing how discipline and communication takes place will prove to be very helpful. Depending on your choice to go to a public or private school, there will be many differences. If your child has an IEP, I suggest that you reach out to Marquette Univerity's Dispute Resolution Department. They have a mediation program that ensures that IEP needs are met for children. They have wonderful resources and alot of information if you need to examine some school choices."

My son does have an IEP, he is classified as Communication Impaired. He is currently in 9th grade, in all resource room classes.

Hi. Greatschools is a nationwide forum, and unfortunately the chance of finding someone from the same town, with a child of similar age, and with similar needs, is slim.
I have a teen with special needs, but I know there are so many different categories of special needs, that it's impossible to answer your question without knowing more. Schools for kids with physical disabilities are often different from those with emotional disabilities, etc.
Does your child currently have an IEP, and if so, what is his/her eligibility category? What grade are they in? Have you talked to your child's current case manager to ask about alternative schools?
