Failing 10th grade

maha321
My daughter's last report card is awful. In tears, she says she cannot think with all the confusion at Deland High. She has a friend who goes to Storefront in Orange City, and his grades have greatly improved. He says the atmosphere is peaceful, and he is able to concentrate. Is anyone familiar with this school program?

I know it's not optimal, but could your daughter eat a sandwich quickly, and at least spend 15 minutes in the tutoring center per day? What about asking if an NHS (National Honor Society) student nominee, who is typically an upperclassman and who has to earn "service hours" could tutor her before or after school? (Tutoring counts as service hours in our high school.) Florida is supposed to have a very good cyber-schooling program, too...

Thanks for answering. I talked with the counselor and she can't transfer to a different class, and tutoring is only available to her during her 30 minute lunch break. All other means are gone due to budget cuts.I have emailed her teacher and asked for a conference, but I don't know yet what his level of involvement will be. Meanwhile, my daughter is frustrated by her recent grades and feels like a failure. All I can do right now is wait.

maha321, have you spoken to your daughter's counselor regarding the problem? Although it's often easier to do at semester break, could your daughter transfer to a different geometry class? Are there any opportunities for her to get "extra help?' (For example, my son's high school had a "math lab" and a "writing lab" that had teachers available for help during various times of the day. When students had a study hall or lunch, they could get a pass to go to the tutoring rooms instead. It usually wasn't their same teacher "on duty," which was fine, since sometimes a different teacher could explain things better.)
As far as transferring to a different school, every district has different policies on whether or not it's allowed. You might want to ask your daughter's friend's family how they got him transferred, or call the district offices.
Another possibility might be having your daughter take "cyber school" classes...here's a recent discussion involving another 10th grade student: community.greatschools.net/q-and-a/334497/Is-there-any-way-credits-for-high-school-students-can-make-up-credits-with-accredited-online-classes?

Hey! OK. She says the classes are just too uncontrolled, and she is having a tough enough time with geometry without the teacher just letting everything go over his head and saying he "can't wait to retire". She complains about noise and total lack of discipline.
