When should I begin looking for a preschool?

mzjackson
My son just turned 3. Kids don't start preschool until age 4, right? So when should I start looking at schools? And how do I sign him up for state-funded preschool programs in CA?

Oh im sorry i forgot, there are many programs depending on the area you live, that offer these head-star progras. You can just google it like that , head-start and you will probably need to enter a zip code or something. Its pretty easy to sign him , well there is some paper work to fill out and you will need a physicall and dental record.

I think you should already start looking for a pre-school or even one of those head start programs. Kids can start at 3 and its great for them. Even though they do not start kinder garten till they are 5 and they do have to do 2 years of pre-school if they start at 3 but I would really recommend it. My son started at age 4 because I started looking for a pre-school a little too late and there was no more room for him, but my daughter started at 3 and went 2 years and she did great.

no children can start at 3. usually they need to be able to use the toilet not diapers. I,m not sure about the funding .I know that individual schools do look at your child ,family finances and they will have some funding.
When my son was in Preschool age 3 only child, my friend was an aide to the teacher she had 3 sons this helped her pay for part of the tuition . With allthe time spent there she eventually became a substitute teacher, worked out well.

In most communities, preschools start at age 3, although who pays for the child to attend can vary based on income level (ie, Head Start programs.) I understand the preschool situation in CA is quite "competitive," so it's probably not too soon to start looking, if you want your child to attend one. You might want to join Greatschools Preschool Parents Group at community.greatschools.net/groups/11534 to talk with other families, and see what they're doing.

Preschools have different regulations regarding age start dates. Some start as young as 18 months to age two. (they may charge more for diaper duty). Some will not accept children until they are potty trained. In my experience, you should start searching and comparing now so that you may do so thoroughly. You may want to tour each facility. Many have waiting lists. My youngest son had been on a waiting list for over 7 months but the preschool we got him into was worth the wait. Good luck to you!
