MA Mom needs speech/language Dr. adviceeeds help

johnnysmom
torn between Dr Robert Kemper, Haverhill and Cathy Salciccia (recommended by Martha Collette). Hope it's ethical to ask this on line - lots of $ and I just want to get the right Dr for an initial eval of a 6 1/2 year-old. again, thanks!

Hi Johnysmom,
Feel free to contact me offline if you'd like.

Dr. Kemper is very good - I have two clients that have used him. His reports are clear and offer specific recommendations that can be implemented by schools. He is able to integrate challenges in the areas of both oral language and literacy - this is very helpful for kids struggling with reading and writing.

I do not know Cathy Salciccia and cannot comment. In general, I would make sure that she works with school aged children and is well versed in the workings and issues in school settings. I would want to be sure that her reports are comprehensive - outline the test results, interpretations, implications and recommendations in a clear and comprehensive manner. Should you need to seek legal recourse, I would want to know whether or not she'd be willing to testify.

Kathleen Gabrowski is another EXCELLENT Slp in the Boston area. She has an office in Boston and Swampscot. She is very familiar with how schools work and give you great guidance on what your child needs to make progress in the school system.

Sarah Ward is another excellent SLP. Her wait is VERY long - so beware. She specializes in language and executive functioning. Her expertise is very helpful if your child has organization and planning issues along with struggles with language.

It is lots of $$ - especially if you add a neuorpychological evaluation to the mix. Your expenses (including mileage) could be tax deductible as a medical expense. Keep this in mind and consult a tax professional.

Hi. Greatschools is a nationwide forum. Unfortunately, the chance of finding another parent from the same area, with a child of similar age who has similar needs, and is familiar with both doctors you mention is slim....As it happens, I do know of someone from MA who may be able to give you an opinion, so I'll point her to your question...
I'd also like to invite you to join Greatschools Learning and Attention Difficulties group at community.greatschools.net/groups/11554, where other parents of kids with special needs can give you more advice and support.
