Special Needs

Fr NJ- I have a child with special needs who will be starting Kindergarten next school yr; we're looking to move to GA... was looking to get some feedback as to how services are for this district. Please help! Any info is greatly appreicated!!!! Thanks!

My child has been in Cobb County schools, Special Education for the past six years. Some years with teachers have been better than others. No matter what school/school system you move to, I HIGHLY recommend reviewing www.parenttoparentofga.org website. It is full of valuable information that any parent of a special needs child (no matter the disability) can benefit from. Remember, no matter how sincere or helpful the school appears to be, parents need to be well informed of the child's and parent's rights!

There is a public school in East Cobb Marrietta called Marbey. Excellent school.

Check into the elemetary schools near Brookstone subdivision in Acworth GA. My kids are Target/ALP there, but I have heard from other parents that the elementary schools help all special needs very well.
(Parent at Ford Elementary). The website lists the Eip/ieps? at the school, and you can ask them questions specific to your child.

I am not in the Georgia area. However, you could use the Research & Compare feature here at GreatSchools (it's the second item in the bright green bar up above) to get a list of schools in the districts you are looking to relocate to. Will your decision on where to live be dependent on the school you like?

I would suggest that you also speak with your daughter's current teacher and the person in charge of students with IEP's at her current school before school ends for summer break to get a general idea of what to expect in Kindergarten. Most likely, you'll be updating your daughter's IEP before school ends for summer break.

Private schools, as you may know, can be expensive. And they are not under the same obligations to adhere to a child's IEP. No matter where you live, the public school must follow the recommendations in the IEP.

My daughter was diagnosed with Autistic Spectrum Disorder... she is currently is Pre K (public school)in a LD class and yes, with an IEP in place. In terms of Private or Public- I guess public. Not unless there is a huge difference in the quality of service for provided in both settings. We are looking at Paulding district or Acworth district... thanks for the help.
