Wow! Thanks for the insights. I've always wanted to transfer my daughter to Walnut. But now I'm giving it second thoughts. One, because I like to ask questions, and two, I certainly don't want to see my work at Open House.
Regarding the previous comment about low test scores. Be carefull how you look at that, because high test scores could mean a narrow curriculum that focuses only on the state test.
Schools with lower test scores tend to have better teachers! The teachers have to WORK to get their students where they need to be. They think more about how they will teach something if the pressure is on them to raise their scores. Wherever you take your daughter make sure the teacher discusses with you how she is progressing in meeting the state standards. My experience is that many teachers in this district don't focus as much on the state standards. They use the textbooks and TEST a lot and if your child is not a good test taker, then she's out of luck! My child's teacher suggested we send her to Kumon or something like that! Hey! I thought I'm paying taxes to have my child educated in a public school! Also, know that you might be asked to work on projects at home and these will be what you're looking at during Open House. And if you challenge anyone or ask questions, it will be frowned upon. The only way to get something done is to complain to someone at the district level. It's not all it appears to be in this district. Students who need help don't get it because most kids are like your daughter and are above where they are supposed to be when they walk in the door. But if she needs any extra help, good luck getting it. You have to fight for it.
