MomOf2Angels
Can anyone copare these two schools. Both are co-ed, private, NIAS certified but their tuitions differs by 5K and extended care costs less. Any input will be appreciated.

We were a "St. Andrew's Family" for 11 years. The most obvious difference in contrast with Hillbrook is that St. Andrew's is a non-secular school. The religion is taught with a light hand, and with plenty of respect shown for other religions. The school population includes non-christians (as we are). In my experience the non-christians choose St. Andrew's because of the excellent academic level, the strong parent involvement and the lively multi-faceted & enriched curriculum, which includes many field trips & "hands-on" experiental type learning. St. Andrew's is not as lavish a setting as Hillbrook, it is very attractive tho. The students walk along forested Saratoga Creek each day as they go to & from the playing fields. The school faces the Saratoga Heritage Orchard, with a view of the Santa Cruz Mts. Another big plus for St. Andrew's is the commitment to the mentoring of the first year teachers by the more experienced teachers. This helps to ensure continuity and that the teachers are working together as a community. The teacher retention is high.
Results: My children then went to Saratoga High School, which is a quite competitive, highly academically oriented school. They both did very well with the solid foundation they received at St. Andrew's. Subsequently, they have gone to: A. one of the top 5 US universities and B. one of the top 25 US universities (with a huge 50% scholarship awarded).

Hi HugYourKid, That's a rather cynical comment. Just because people make positive comments about a school experience doesn't mean the comments are "planted". Maybe no Hillbrook fans hangs out on this site. Of course all families look for things unique for them in a school, and different schools will fit families differently. Of course families should check them out in person. Of course none is 100% perfect and one has to weigh the pros and cons. Having experienced both schools, I for one can say St. Andrew's provides a much better environment for my children and my family. Your mileage may vary. These comments are freely given and in no way solicited by either school. Cheers, gosaints

Also take a look at Sacred Heart School in Saratoga - on Saratoga Avenue just across the street from St. Andrews. It is a catholic school, but non-catholics are welcome. It is a hidden gem in Saratoga.

This question and its answers sound too good to be true. My hunch is someone at St Andrew's posed the question and asked specific parents to respond. Look, both of these schools in the south bay are excellent independent schools. They differ a bit and parents prioritize the differences by varying standards. St Andrews might be more like a traditional private school with all core academics in the AM, but that's not for everyone. Hillbrook has most of the core stuff in the AM, but there is also value in having some throughout the day - more like High School and life for that matter. Check out both schools yourself. Visit. Tour. Shadow. No matter which school you choose, after a few years you'll find that neither school is perfect. As a parent, complement what the school provides with appropriate studies and activities at home. Everyone is better for it, especially your kids.

My two children went to Hillbrook for 4 years. We found the academics to be weak. St. Andrews school is more like the catholic school we attend now. Good strong academics. Hillbrook gives little feed back on your child, even though the classes are small. Don't be fooled by the beautiful setting at Hillbrook. My children had to catch up in catholic school.
