We applied to a Magnet school two years in a row and did not get in. We chose a private school and have been very pleased!! The school has been very accommodating and extremely helpful with my daughter's academic weakness. Although private schools are not free, there are many who offer financial scholarships. Don't count out a private school just yet. It all depends on what your child needs. And with as much "school shopping" that we did for my daughter, you'll know when the school is right.

The deadline to apply for magnet schools is coming up very soon. If you can get into the school of your choice, they are better than the private schools for a couple of reasons. First of all, of course, is the free education. Second, the student body is much more diverse, both racially and socioeconomically than private schools and therefore will help to prepare students for life in the real world and help them develop skills to get along with all types of people. Third, public schools are much more willing (and are also required by law) to meet the needs of all students, so if your child has difficulty in some area, they must work with parents to get the best possible education for their students. Some of the private schools in Montgomery have many round holes for students, but if your child is a square peg, they just don't fit. Do your research and talk to parents in the school of your choice, as well as the teachers and administrator if you get the opportunity.
