Good public/charter schools in Tucson

zenara
We are moving to Tucson in the Spring. I am looking for a great public/charter school for my second grader. Also, I am looking for a "Waldorf-style" creative preschool for my 1 1/2 year old. Help! I would appreciate any suggestions.

Try the International School - they follow international standards which are 2 - 4 years ahead of AZ and they do it in another language which adds more interest. My children and their friends love school and are way ahead of their neighbors and cousins.

I should clarify, for anyone else reading this thread, that there are several Montessori schools here. Most of which are charter. The only good one in my opinion is on the far east side of town against the Rincon Mountains. The rest pale, or don't follow through with the total Dr. Maria Montessori curricula.

I'm not at the international school. I'm at another private school.

What Child of Ra says! We didn't intend private school, but after looking at the options chose the International School (is that where you are Child of Ra?). Everything in Tucson is word of mouth so it is hard to know from afar unti you are here. IST has many of the same approaches as Waldorf, but is language-immersion and more emphasis on reading, writing and rithmetic. Also, the Waldorf school here is more about being from the "right" family and less about being the right program for your child. Look the GS reviews for some clues. And as always read between the lines. Hope this helps.

There is a Waldorf school here which always was reported to be a great school, but lately there have been some bad rumors going around. I've heard stories of violence/bullying there which may or may not be true, so I suggest you research the school fully, and speak to parents who are at the school before enrolling.

There is ONE good Montessori charter here, but for preschool they require the kids to be 100% fully self sufficient in potty training and require no adult assistance. They will not change diapers.

For this reason, we enrolled our 3yr old son in a private school which has amazing word of mouth. If you want more information, please feel free to private message me.
