Kindergarten isn't what it used to be. They expect so much out of tiny people that's it's a challenge for even the oldest most mature kids. Essentially what was first grade curriculum has worked its way into kindergarten.
Sadly, school only starts one time a year, in the Fall. So they have to have a cutoff at some point, and public schools are mandated by the state they're in as to what that date is. They make no exceptions. Occasionally a child can enter a private school for kindergarten, be successful there and then go to a public first grade without revisiting the age issue.
But your son is only little once, and think of how much more successful he'll be being one of the biggest, tallest, most mature kids, instead of the youngest, squirrelliest kids in the class. While it might be a tougher call if your child met the deadline, be thankful the state made that agonizing decision for you, and he'll get one more year of being a kid :)
If your child attends "preschool, they will do a test, however, ( this is just my opinion) i am friends, with some "Teachers" who are 3rd grade teachers, and they seem to think, that if they are not 5 years old, for at least 6 months, they seem to be behind in "maturity". Even in 3rd grade it show's.
Hi. Unfortunately, you've posted on a nationwide forum, not on a specific school's website. Your best bet is to phone the school you're interested in sending your child to, and see if they make exceptions or have any type of proficiency/readiness test for incoming kindergarteners.
