I'm looking for feedback on Roscoe Nix Elementary School, Silver Spring MD.

almoss
My son will be ready for elementary school next year and the little bit I've read on-line about the school doesn't sound very good. My husband and I are trying to decide between public and private school.

I've heard good things about the Barrie School. Really, in many neighborhoodsa round Silver Spring or Wheaton, you usually would want a private school. The public schools are often over run with illegal immigrants. Nothing wrong with that per se, but the resources are focused on getting those kids up to par with basic English, rather than challenging the bright students, or trouble students, of other ethnicities. It's simply unfair. No Child Left Behind ruins it.

Greetings,
I am a parent of a student who attends Nix. I have to say, overall, I am very pleased with the school and my childs acedemic performance there. If you are an active parent and take an active part in your childs education I believe that you will be pleased with this school Ms. Folks, the principal is great and so are the staff and teachers. I am happy that my child started her acedemic public schooling @ Nix, it is a great place.

I don't know much about the school at all. We haven't gone yet to visit. We are thinking about Julia Brown Montessori, Newport School, and Barrie School. I've heard good things about St. John the Baptist on New Hampshire but we are looking for a non-church affiliated school. Have you visited?

Hi,
I happen to be in the same boat...looking for answers as well. We live in Burnt Mills and expect to put our son in school at Roscoe Nix next year. I also have reservations... but I have to say, my neighbors (3 of whom have 1st graders there now) all say ONLY great things about the school. They all like the principal and appreciate the small class size and extra attention their kids have gotten. I'd like to learn what else you know about the school or where else you'd be looking...

Unfortunately, Greatschools is a nationwide forum, and the chance of finding someone from the same town, with a child the same age, attending a specific school, is slim. I looked to see if anyone else had left comments on the "Research and Compare" part of Greatschools website, but there aren't any: www.greatschools.net/modperl/browse_school/md/4016
I would definitely encourage you to visit whatever schools you're considering, and make a decision after you have a chance to see them/ask direct questions. You might also be interested in joining Greatschools Kindergarten Parents Group at community.greatschools.net/groups/11535
