How important is (or should be) cultural diversity in Elementary School?

Anonymous
I believe in teaching my children to discover and appreciate cultural differences. I am relocating to the Johnson County KS Area and want to know if these schools will continue to support what my former schools executed so well.

I'm not from Kansas, and I don't know the circumstances surrounding your move, but I think it's wise for parents to visit prospective schools in a community they might consider relocating to, before committing to a move. Every family has different priorities when it comes to their child's education. Some may want to know about availability of gifted programs, or special education services, or sports opportunities, or fine arts, etc. but the only way to know if it meets YOUR expectations is by seeing for yourself. In any case, parents are always their children's "first and most important teachers" so if you promote cultural diversity learning opportunities in your home, then your children will likely embrace your beliefs, too.

there is so much baggage related to cultural differences which may mean: international/domestic born, variations in income/socio-economic status, educational attainment, differences in educational achievement/aspirations, etc... maybe you need to think through everything. its hard to value diversity when it has negative connotations within some school systems.. so you may not get a simple, honest answer to a complex and difficult question. hope this helps.
