I don't know your reasons for moving to Calabasas, but if I would have a choice I wouldn't ever again move to California. I hope you understand how different is education in UK from US, especially in California. We moved from Chicago to California and are trully hating It. Las Virgines School District is one of the good districts in southern California, however there is an even better one, Oak Park school district. I grew up in Soviet Union and have little understanding of Europe and its education, on the top of everything I was a teacher. Good luck, hope this helps.

Hi! We are actually living in the UK right now and will be returning home this summer (Aug 09) We live in Agoura. My son started school there Kindergarten & 1st grade and my DD was about to start Kindergarten (yr1 to you) They both started at a very small private UK school so that they could get help if they needed it.

DS started year 3 and DD year1. They both had a lot of catching up to do!!!! in the US K/yr1 is when they learn their letters and sounds and are reading by the end of that year. But in the UK all of the yr1 kids were already reading!!! In 2 months both kids completely caught up to where they needed to be! Phew!
But in the other areas, like math and social studies, time & money they are equal with the kids in the US.

So, this is a long winded way to say.... that the schools in the US (at east So Cal) are behind in reading and dont push the kids as hard in the early years.
When we return to the US this fall, the kids will both be comfortably ahead but it should be fine in the other areas.

The Las Virgenes schools are fantastic! You don't need to go private in this area. My friends in Calabasas prefer Round Meadow to Lupin, so do a tour and request a school of choice if you can.
Prepare yourself for the culture shock and bring lots of tea with you! (somehow its not the same there) :o)

Not sure if private school is an option but if it is than Calabasas has one of the top private schools around in Viewpoint School and best of all it's K - 12! Probably not an option for this year since I'm sure applications were due a while ago, but if private school is of interest in the coming years than this is the one to check out!

Thank you to all who have taken the time to email me. This is a huge step for us. Although I am a US citizen I have lived almost my entire life in the UK - but we love California and can't wait to get out there. We are visiting for a couple weeks in Aug/Sept 2009 and will view some schools then. In the mean time, if anyone has ANY advice for us in relation to moving to California we would very much appreciate it. My husband and I both need to find employment - I am a lawyer in the UK so I need to sit the California Bar exam to practice law in CA. My husband is unqualified in any profession in the UK so is looking forward to doing something completely different in the USA!

Let me add to what MagnetMom has already shared: your family is moving into an area that is widely known for its outstanding schools -- its one of the reasons people move to the area.

Welcome to Southern California.

Angelina30, welcome to GreatSchools.

The good news, you will soon find out is the Las Virgenes Unified School District is the envy of much of Southern California. You will find that your home will zone you for a specific school within the district. If you already know your address you can use the LVUSD school finder to determine your school: corp.lvusd.org/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=68&Itemid=144

Good luck, and welcome to the San Fernando Valley!

According to the "Research and Compare" feature on the green menu bar near the top of this page, your choices are www.greatschools.net/california/calabasas/elementary-schools/

In the U.S., it's important to know that PUBLIC schools usually have "attendance boundaries," and the address of your house or apartment determines which school your child will be sent to. There are some special situations, but if you find a school that you would like your children to go to, you need to be sure that you live in the proper attendance area.
