San Diego Area High Schools

tycamille
I am looking for feedback from those of you living in the San Diego area regarding high schools. I am looking for a high school in an affordable area that offers good academics, safety and a good football program, wrestling program and girls volleyball, swimming and track. While looking on the San Diego MLS site, I saw many neighborhoods to choose from and figure I need to start with the schools. We'd like to live as close to SDSU as possible, with affordable homes and good high school at the top of the wish list. If you can recommend high schools and neighborhoods to get me started in my MLS search, I'd really appreciate it!

I live 15 minutes north of SDSU. Off the I-15, Clairmont Mesa going east. The community falls in the "Metro San Diego" title. Zip is 92124. There are several types of housing available from Apartments to 5 bedroom homes. You might see homes in the low 400K range. The High School (Serra ) is diverse. My kids arn't old enough to attend but I hear that the AP classes are great and filled with good students. Their football team is pretty good, however the sport with the best rep is girls Field Hockey. good luck with the move.

Hi Ty,

I've lived all over San Diego since I moved here during my own high school years, and now live just east of SDSU in La Mesa. My husband teaches at SDSU. I don't know specifically about the athletics programs, but Valhalla and Santana High Schools are both in the La Mesa area and have scores equal to the trendy north county high schools (I attended Torrey Pines and can't imagine a more academically oriented school - and the ones here score just as high). As a community, La Mesa has flat lands with smaller homes and hills with more expensive ones. There is a wide variety of size and price in the market here. There is also fairly easy access to the Trolley which goes straight to SDSU. If you are looking for an apartment, new ones have just been built right next to the Trolley at Grossmont center.
I've lived in Rancho Santa Fe, Point Loma, Chula Vista and at SDSU, but I've been in La Mesa for 12 years now and wouldn't choose to move.
Good Luck!

Kim
