MIDDLE SCHOOL ENTRY AGE REQUIREMENT

sirishaditham
My son is 10 and is coming out of a private school. He will be ready to join 6th grade in September '09 - does this pose any age issues to enroll in public school system?

Hi sirishaditham and welcome to GreatSchools. I'm in Southern California, but I concur with healthy11's response.

Schools here in CA are concerned about the age for kindergarten, but once a child has been in an accredited school and handles schoolwork, no one is going to take issue with a child's age. After all, students who skip a grade or two are younger.

I'm not from CA, but generally if an older student's records show that they've successfully mastered the coursework of a prior grade, then a new school wouldn't question the student's placement in the subsequent grade. (For kindergarten students, there is normally an age cut-off, but not for middle school students. If your son finishes 5th grade with satisfactory progress, and not failing grades, then the public school should not have any issue with his birthdate.)
