What are the differences between Kingwood High School and Kingwood Park High School?

BBallMom
We will be moving to Houston area. We have a 14 yr. old entering HS and I am trying to get information about attending Kingwood Park HS vs. Kingwood HS. My son is an average student who would like to participate in Football and Basketball. Any info. would be appreciated.

textmama15, do you attend either school? Why do you feel one is better than the other?

Healthy11: Do you live in the Kingwood Area? Are both KPHS and KHS 9th -12th grade? There is conflicting info. in the internet. I read KPHS has about 1,220 students and KHS has about 3900. I also read KPHS is only 1 year old. The Kingwood area looks so big on a map that I need to understand the population disparity. Pls. Help. If you live in the Kingwood area, can you choose which school to attend or are there boundaries? We will be moving from another state and I have never been to Houston. Thx.

BBallMom, I don't live in TX, but I believe the poster named "lillian12" does live in Houston...You might try to send her a private message, and see if she can advise you. I'll also try to let her know about your dilemma. (Sorry, I believe textmama15 is just a bored teen on winter break who is "picking names out of a hat."...she's previously advised people which neighborhoods to move to in Georgia, now told you which high school to go to in TX, and is not giving detailed information to anyone.)

According to these profiles, Kingwood Park is designed to be a smaller school with a more intimate atmosphere. I don't know if there is any criteria for getting in the smaller one, so I would call the school and ask.

FYI, Kingwood is a planned suburban community. I'm not sure how large it is these days, but I'd guess it has about 100,000 people. It's very, very suburban.

I am a Kingwood mom and graduate of Kingwood High. Kingwood high was the main campus and Kingwood Park used to be the 9th grade campus. Due to the size and continual growth of Kingwood, they made the 9th grade campus (KPHS) as separate full campus. By 2010 it will house all grade levels. They opened to the campus to 9th and 10th in 07, and have added a grade level each year. Both Kingwood High and K Park are excellent schools. The divsion line for the high schools is determined by which middle school the child would go to. I am also aware that they except a certain number of students that would otherwise go to the Kingwood High. If you would like a little more attention given then K park would be better suited, it is a 4A ranking instead of 5A ( kIngwood High). Also K park will give your student more opportunity to be on both the football and other sports. hope this helps.

My son is currently in 11th grade and has experienced Kingwood High School and Kingwood Park. It is easier to make varsity teams at KPARK and easier to be ranked in the higher percentile, but Kingwood High School is to me the better way to go. Yes, more competitive, but an excellent school. If you ask most people in the Kingwood area they will tell you Kingwood High is better academic wise, and sport teams are much better. However, Kingwood Park is not bad at all, my son enjoyed it there. I all comes down to if your child wants a big school (KHS) or smaller (KPARK). Don't let the age of the school influence you because Kingwood High has just finished construction and looks very nice as does Kingwood Park. Hopes this helps! You will enjoy the Kingwood area!

BBallMom: I know I'm a little late here, but I just found ya'll. We are moving to Kingwood....be there in two weeks. I found a great map of Kingwood on the internet that shows all the dividing lines of the different villages and their respective schools. The east side goes to KH and west side goes to KPH. I'll see if I can find the link and post it here.
Prefer KPHS. I've had a child at both high schools.
Principal MUCH more involved and interested in knowing all the students at the campus.
Each class grade has approx. 400 students, so when there are Seniors in the '09-'10 school year there will be approx. 1600 students. Kingwood High School has approx. 600 students per grade. KHS used to have all the students in grades 10-12 with KPHS having only 9th graders. When that was the case KHS had over 1000 students per graduating class. KPHS is good about recognizing student's accomplishments whether they be for sports, band, Debate, UIL Academics, etc.
Some teachers still stand at their doors and greet the students. The principal has sent most of his teachers to a program called Capturing Kids' Hearts. Very powerful program and you can tell the difference in the school atmosphere instantly bet. KHS and KPHS. Teachers, Administrators, etc. have TRUE open door policies and really care about kids.
