ADHD/Non verbal Learning Disabilities - where for help?

cvmike
Our fifth grader has ADHD, dyslexia and auditory processing disorder. He is also socially anxious in class and age inappropriate. He cannot take social ques from peers and is picked on. We have tried meds as a last resort and did not like the result(loss of weight, sluggish, anti-social). We believe it is time to visit Lucille Packard Children's Hospital at Stanford to see a Pediatric Neuropsycholgist or Psychiatrist. Do you have any feedback on 1) anybody that has gone that route or 2) any other resources in San Jose, Palo Alto, etc. (we are in Santa Cruz)....

Also look into the Center for Developing Minds in Los Gatos. They follow Mel Levine's methods, if you have read a All Kinds of Minds by Levine. Excellent resource. Experts in the field.

The Children's Health Counsel is right across the street from LPCH and they are amazing. It is not a place to fix the meds but their social skills groups are a lifesaver. Much of my sons social anxiety was alleviated there. chconline.org

There are many things you can do if your child does not react to meds. Interactive metronome has had success with ADHD kids, so has biomedical nutrition which addresses food sensitivities as well as other digestive problems which effect behavior. My son has had great results on this program. Check out autism.com for biomedical certified doctors, interactivemetronome.com, readingplus.com and familywellnessoptions.com.

My son has non-verbal learning disabilities and a social cognition defect. He goes to M.G. Winner's Center for Social Thinking in San Jose and has had great success! We also struggled with meds!! Trouble with sleep, nausea, weight gain and the list goes on. We went to see Dr. Wm. Klindt he specializes in finding the right medication. He researches alternatives of medication use. He was able to find a medication that worked to stabilize my son's attention, anxiety and impulse control issues. My son is no longer on meds and is doing very well.

thank you. I have re-posted question in the area you suggested. You are correct, the doctor was not a child/adolescent psychiatrist.

My son also has ADHD and dyslexia, but dysgraphia and not APD... I don't live in CA, but my initial reaction is to ask whether the doctor that prescribed your son's medications was a regular pediatrician, or a child/adolescent psychiatrist? I'm guessing it wasn't a specialist, and that's why your son's results were less than beneficial.

I don't know exactly where she lives in CA, but there's a member of Greatschools named "SoCalGal" and you might want to send her a private message to ask if she can recommend any local children's mental health specialist...I'd also like to recommend that you join and post future questions in Greatschools Learning and Attention Difficulties Group at community.greatschools.net/groups/11554 where many more parents who can relate to your situation will be able to offer advice and support.
