Moving to Mobile

yateo5
We will be moving to Mobile this summer and I am looking for a wonderful school for my children. My first preference would be a public elementary and middle school, but I am open to private schools. Any suggestions?

McGill Toolen and St. Mary's are the 2 I know of in Mobile. Both are excellent schools.

Thanks for all of the great information! We would love info on churches too. Do you have the address of the home that just went up for sale? I would be interested in checking that out. I am also looking at the Baker district. As you said, many Coasties seem to live there as it is close. How far would you say you are from the airport? THANKS A BUNCH FOR YOUR HELP!

We are in the 36693 zip code and the neighborhood is Canterbury Heights. If you look at a map, it is between Demetropolis Rd. and Knollwood Dr., just north of Girby Rd. (Funny thing -- a totally updated house with 5 bedrooms just went up for sale three doors down from us just yesterday!) This is an older neighborhood, but many of the families have been here for 20+ years. There are some newer neighborhoods just north of here along Knollwood and some pricier new construction between us and Burns Middle School on Girby.

Mobile School districts are a bit random in their division, so just because you go to Burns for middle school does not necessarily mean that you will also be in Murphy district. You'd want to look at each house individually to see which schools that home was assigned to.

I have no personal experience with Baker High School (which is out closer to the Coast Guard base), but it appears to have a good reputation as far as test scores. I don't believe that it offers as much in the way of advanced academic programs, but I could be wrong.

If you decide to look closer to our area, I can also refer you to some good churches. I looked at your bio. :-) I'm a Christian too!

Could you tell me the zip code or some neighborhood names in this area? We are coming to Mobile to househunt and I am looking into family friendly neighborhoods in good school zones. Thanks for any help you can give me!

I have a daughter in 7th grade at Burns Middle School (also sometimes listed as Cranford Burns Middle School). We had considered private school options for her and honestly felt that there were more opportunities for learning for her at Burns. The teachers are creative and enthusiastic about teaching and my daughter is having a fabulous year. We also look forward to her attending Murphy High School (my alma mater) once she enters ninth grade and hope that she may be accepted into the International Baccalaureate program there. We have also heard many good things about Dodge Elementary. I know that Dodge does some "pre-engineering" activietes to prepare the students for the EYE (Engaging Youth in Engineering) program at Burns. I hope this helps!

We are considering moving to Mobile also. We will be moving from Miami, Florida so it is a totally different life! Please let me know if you hear of any Catholic private schools. Thanks
