What do you think about fundraisers in public schools?

Schoolyears
It seems fundraisers take too much of parents' time and effort. It's also distracting students from the main purpose of school - education. They start viewing the school as fund raising machine for air conditioners, playground equipment, etc. I think if the school needs financial support, the parents can just make certain money donations towards particular purpose. It would be more efficient. I'd like to hear more opinions on the issue.

I too would much rather donate money to a school than to purchase items through a fundraiser and have a portion of the profit go the the third party vendor. It would be nice if the property taxes we pay could cover all school expenses, but I don't see that happening any time soon- at least not without cutting a number of programs that I feel are important.

I hate fundraisers. My kids hear me complain all the time that I wish I could just write a check once a year for the school. But it still frustrates me that I pay taxes for the school district, but still have to make third party merchants a bit wealthier so the school can have things like computers or playground equipment. That is not right.

I agree with you. We are very busy and my children stopped selling stuff two years ago. We donate money to our children's school and subscribe our family magazines, which we need.
My daughter's school will start taking check or cash from January, 2009. No more selling of things many people do not need and more money for the school.

Talk with your children's school PTA and other parents for a change.
