San Diego Schools for NVLD?

Anonymous
My 1st grader hates school, struggles with feeling behind the others, frustrated most of time. He has a good school but IEP and the State of California are don't recognize NLVD. We are agonizing and grieving as we watch his frustration and as he slips away into hating school and learning. We found an alternative program but it is 35K per year. Our options seem to be to leave him at the mercy of the school district or finance our futures.

NO public school recognizes NVLD, because it's not listed as one of the eligibility categories under IDEA...(for another example, neither is CAPD) so you're fortunate that your son was able to get an IEP, although it sounds like the school isn't sure how to teach to his needs. Many of us have found that we have to "educate the educators" as to our children's needs...Given that he's just a first grader, what kind of goals does your son have on his IEP? Have you received any notice of his progress (or lack thereof) towards the goals? If what the school is currently doing isn't effective, you can request another IEP meeting at any time, to modify the plan... I'd like to suggest that you join the Learning and Attention Difficulties Group at community.greatschools.net/groups/11554, where many more parents will be able to help you with the IEP process. You might also want to join www.millermom.proboards107.com, where I know several parents of kids with NVLD participate.
