what are the requirements to pull a 10 year old out of public school

bcrdm1
My granddaughter was recently removed from public school. Her mother told the school that she would be home schooling her. She has been out of school for about 3 wks. and has had done nothing that I know of except read on one book(in a room by herself). Is this legal, if not who needs to know?

I'm sorry i may have come across wrong on this subject of homeschooling, but i was just trying to give you the information that i have and where i got it from. I'm not saying that the administration offices typically carry this information, but mine did make it availiable to me. My state does require proof of what you are learning and how many hours per day, and days per week, and so on. Not all states are this way, i was just saying that its possible that they might require this information. I had researched tons of info on the net before even going to the administration office for the school district. Alot of schools may not hand out this information. Dont they receive funding for each child enrolled at that school anyway? If so, of course they wouldnt give you the information to take your child out, they would lose money, right? lol.......i dont know, anyway the administration office gave me the paperwork to file with the right people, thats all i'm saying.

Not all states require you to register to homeschool or chart everything. Again it all depends on your state. So please find out the law before moving on this. I live in Michigan and pretty much you just homeschool. I don't have to keep any records (I do keep some though just in case) if I don't want to and I don't have to report to anyone. So if you go to that website I gave you www.hslda.org/laws/defult.asp you should be able to find out what is required to homeschool. I wouldn't suggest going to the school administration about it because a lot of times they don't really know the homeschool laws and may misinterpret them. So either going to the website I mentioned or even Googling your state and homeschooling laws should help you to know what the laws are.

There is no law or not any laws that say your child has to go to a government school. However, in most states, including mine, you must register with the state board of education as a homeschooler, or, you will most likely find soical services at your front door. I decided to homeschool my daughter and was turned in for this; luckily, I had already registered with my state, Kansas Board of Education, as a homeschooler. Therefore, the point was mute. I must admit I am bias, but our local neighborhood school academians were very condescending and intimated I did not have the "brains" to teach my child. Best wishes to yourself and your granddaughter.

Anyone can go to the Administration office in the school district and get paper work on homeschooling and it will list the requirements. Also the website metioned in the other comments would help you tons! Your grandaughters mother may not know that she is required to give a detailed list of curriculum that she is to be teaching, how many hours per day, and days per week. She will have to chart everything including scores and such that she will have to provide to the state. Also if i'm not mistaken from 3rd grade on there are state mandated tests at the end of the school year (i think in April or May) that the child will have to take at a certain location and prove that she is learning the curriculum taught by her parent, and if the child doesn't pass, they will be required to be put back into the public school system. I live in Arkansas so the requirements and regulations may be different, but probably similar. I've taught my daughter at home since she was two, up until this year when she enrolled in kindergarten in the public school system and she is really ahead, so it does take effort but its not absurdly hard to teach your children at home. I think you should talk to the Schools Administration office and ask them what can be done and they can give you the list of requirements for your state. Keep me posted and i'll try and look up what i can to help you! Ashley

The laws for homeschooling for each state can be found at www.hslda.org/laws/default.asp just click on the state your granddaughter is in and it should tell you the laws there.
