You've pretty much nailed it. Magnets are more common in the Valley, and new magnets have the benefit of being easier to get into because the buzz isn't so strong. In addition, there are always a few kinks to work out--things that they think will work out one way however they end up a little differently. On the other hand, being in at the beginning means you can control much of how those situations get resolved. In other words you become part of the direction the school takes.

That said, you should look at your current school and see if it's something you really want to leave. I have never really heard of a bad CVUSD school, and plenty of us would move in a heart beat. It's breaking my heart that University and Meadows are closing as I had plenty of friends that came from those schools.

Good luck with your decision!

Yes I did apply... today. I'm just trying to get as much info as possible before I pull my son from a really good traditional school and put him into the earths magnet school. The only downfalls I see are: it being a new school so it will take a couple of years to work out the kinks; the travel is a little longer; and how they incorporate reading, writing, math into a hands on school. I'm just looking for pros and cons.

Hi, blinky,

I am in the San Fernando Valley, but I've been reading about the transition of Manzanita to the new EARTHS magnet. My son is at CLU and I grew up in Thousand Oaks, so it's interesting to see how some of the schools have changed.

There is a bunch of information on the CVUSD website, including an information page at: www.conejo.k12.ca.us/LinkClick.aspx?fileticket=5f89LUCm6Dw%3d&tabid=36&mid=2347

and

www.conejo.k12.ca.us/Default.aspx?alias=www.conejo.k12.ca.us/earths

It looks like they're winding down on their general admission application window, with December 15 being the last day.

They're going to apparently require uniforms, and parents will be required to volunteer a minimum of three hours per month.

It sounds like an interesting opportunity in the Conejo Valley Unified School district. Have you applied?
