Public school normally starts late August and ends mid June of the following year. I think kids born July - December will graduate a year earlier then everyone else. My daughter started pre-pre-school at 2 ½. Her birth month is August. She also went to a Montessori, which was a non-denominational and creative academics learning but the child had to be 2 ½. The school is a year round school. It was a daycare and school. The price of a non-potty trained child is high but after that stage then the price of attending that school is reasonable. The Montessori did a great job and is well worth the $$$ because my daughter comes up with various solutions when problems arises. The teachers tells you the learning progress of your child.

Private schools are more flexible, as are some charters, since they can make their own rules. Once your child has completed kindergarten in a private school, you'll be able to transfer to a first grade, and they won't look at her age any longer.
Public schools tend to be very inflexible with the date, and if it's any consolation, states vary wildly. In California, it's December 2. Of course, you probably are quite happy in the state you're currently in.
