To start, you may want to locate several preschools that are convenient for you and affordable. Talk to other mothers that you know and ask where they are taking their kids. Neighborhoods are great for making new friends, but the kids don't always get along even if the mothers and fathers do. Call to set up a visit at several different preschools to see how they operate and how your son reacts to the environment. Make certain it is not overcrowded, it is clean, the staff are friendly and caring, plenty of activity going on.....crucial time for child development.
I relied heavily on word of mouth when I started my preschool search, but by the time I'd visited two or three, I had a clear idea of what I wanted. So I'd suggest compiling a list of schools you're interested in and then calling and scheduling tours. You can use GreatSchools to look up preschools in your area, but I strongly recommend talking to other parents in your community as well.

And do join us in the Parents of Preschoolers group as suggested in the previous response.
I'm also happy to answer any questions you may have. I just did all my own research and tours a couple months ago and now I'm waiting to hear from the preschools.
Don't worry their are plenty of new mothers in your shoes! GreatSchools has an awesome new link (at the top of the screen in the green bar) called Preschools. Not only will it help you find a preschool, but it will help you decide how to choose one, and it is loaded with great tips and advice. I also checked out your profile and I thought you would be interested in these groups, they could use another voice like yours!
These are great groups for new members and parents of preschoolers, like yourself. Good luck finding a preschool for your son!
