Teacher wonders which school is best to send her son to in Upland Unified School District?

nellyj00
Hi I am a public school teacher who has decided that public school is where my own child belongs. We are located within the Upland Unified School District on Arrow Hwy. I am very picky about my childs education being a teacher myself, and I was wondering if anyone had any advice. There are twoo schools I have been concidering Baldy View and Valencia ( I interviewed at Valencia). Are there any more out there that I should be aware of.
Background information:
My husband ans I are focused on higher education possibly GATE for our son.
Active principal is a must.
Extracirricular activities/ technology based schools are highly sought after.
Thanks for any advice. Kindergarten seems so far away...but as a teacher I "Want to do my homework first!"

In addition to the great advice Magnetmom shared, I'd like to point out something that you probably already know, which is that school administrators, and programs, and even attendance boundaries sometimes do change, so you always need to be aware...

I don't live in Upland Unified, but my son's elementary school had a very well-regarded principal, and when he and his assistant took an early retirement, there was more than a bit of concern about the transition to a new administration. We've also had some new home construction in the area, and people purchased houses on one block, assuming their kids would go to School A, since all the other homes in the neighborhood are zoned for School A, but the district modified the attendance map, and now those students are sent to a different school. Similarly, the GATE/TAG program site in my district has moved to a different building than our "home" school.

The reason I mention the above is just to give a "head's up" to anyone who might be "lurking" and not aware of these sorts of possibilities. I'm sure your child will do well in most any setting, because he's got such concerned parents! :o)

Hi nellyj00,
You don't say how old your son is, but you are definitely on the right track.

You will find that it's a little bit of a challenge to find people from a specific school or a specific neighborhood to respond. In the meantime, make sure you've looked at the Research and Compare tool here on GreatSchools on the upper tool bar. Parent reviews have to be taken with a grain of salt, but they're a start. See if they have tours either now or in the spring. Attend both schools' Open Houses in the spring. Talk to local parents on play dates, at birthday parties, you name it.

I'm over in Los Angeles Unified, so I'm not sure how Upland USD works but find out about school choice/open enrollment options. There may be child care permits, open enrollment, and other options available, or you may find you need to move within the boundaries for assurances that you can attend.

Good luck, and let us know how it goes.
