I am a foreign national studying here New Jersey as F-1 student. My child is in F-2 dependent. Can any one tell me:

Can I admit my child in school in Harrison, NJ. Should I have to pay. I came to know that US citizen get free education up to high school. Is it possible for my child to get such free eduction, though he is not US Citizen.

I appreciate your reply.

azad_gs,

Your child can study for free in any public school (KG-High School) within your area. His/Her legal F-2 status allows him to study just as any other US citizen. You will have to have his birth certificate, legal status certificate, your electricity bill with your address, and perhaps some other form of ID (NJ id card) to show the school when you fill school forms.
In my son's school, we have many children with parents on H-1 visas which is a work visa.
Best of luck.

The children of my husband's friend attended public school just like other American children. That was in NY and he was a resident doctor with F-1 visa. As others suggested, called the school district or contact your school international office.

All the best!

We don't know the age of your child, but in the U.S. the public schools are for kindergarten through high school students. Kindergarten students are normally age 5 or 6. Younger children sometimes attend daycare or preschool, but that is typically paid for by the parents, NOT part of the free education program, unless your child was handicapped.

GreatSchools is a nationwide forum, so I can only speak for certain about California, but any student here legally (or even illegally) gets a free education. Contact the district on Monday and ask them directly.
