How do deal with private school bigotry?

truckeemom
Wish Obama would help with this issue. My public school kids often hear very racially bigoted remarks from their private school friends. Have explained and explained this issue, but at some point should I just cut them off from these friends? Looking for a thoughtful answer, not a rant or the usual private school bullying answer. Thanks.

I'm not sure if I'm interpreting the situation correctly, but Obama's children currently attend a private school that has students of many different racial backgrounds. I doubt those private school children pick on public school kids of any specific race, therefore I'm not sure what he could do to help with the kind of issue you're facing.

How old are your kids? At this point, whatever is being said is apparently upsetting you more than it's upsetting your children, because they still consider the private students to be friends. In the short term, I wouldn't cut them off from the other kids. As your children get older, they may either chose to stop associating with the private school children on their own, because they don't like them, or they may realize they have more in common with other public school students. OR maybe your public kids will stay friendly with the private kids, because they like a variety of acquaintences.

For now, if you're in a situation to be "supervising a play group" or whatever in your house, and you hear racial comments, you might just tell all the kids, "In our house we try to say positive things, and focus on the ways people are alike, not on differences."
