You have to be persistant. Go down to the district office in person, take an advocate to your IEP,dont be afraid to go to due process hearing, if you have a good case and you win, they will have to pay your lawyer. Do let them know why you want to change schools. Document all problems.

Does your son still need the 1-on-1 aide during school hours? Does he present a safety issue to himself and/or others?

If your son has safety issues connected with his autism classification, then an aide should be assigned to your son. If safety is no longer an issue, for him or others, then a 1-on-1 would probably not be assigned to him.

My son had a 1-on-1 aide up through 6th grade. He's in 7th grade now, and no longer needs the aide. He doesn't want one anyway.

Ihave independent psychological evaluation and I discuss all options with IEP and agree with the program because if I will put him in general education class the school district will not give him 1 on 1 aid that he needs .According to LAUSD they can give 1 on 1 aid only if the child has behavior problems.My son has never had such problems. If LAUSD gave me wrong information about 1 on 1 ad please let me know.

Has your son been formally reevaluated by the IEP team? Does your son have a current IEP in place that changes is classification? If not, then that's the first step in getting your son out of the special ed. classes.

I see that your frustrated with the LAUSD, but once you get his IEP updated with his changed classification, you should be able to get him fully included in general ed. classes (if that's what you want for him).

You can also use the Research & Compare feature here at GreatSchools to research other schools in your immediate area to find one that may suit your son's needs.

My son has always been fully included in general ed. classes, but his IEP stated he needed a 1-on-1 aide with him in the classroom. This is his first year without an aide.

My child is currently In LAUSD district 3.I talked with several administrators in my district but they are typical bureacrats and don't give you information about schools in the district.They gave me the school which is closest to me and told me that this one is the only option. The problem is that he is high functioning autistic and it took me whole year and two complaints to the State to get rid of his autistic class which was designed for moderate autistic kids .I was helped by LA County autistic teacher supporter but LAUSD does not have good programs for kids like my son and SDL program is the only option. As I know LAUSD cut this program couple years ago .My concern is if is there any way to find out about schools with LSD program (websites ,newspapers,etc.) without contact LAUSD bureacratic administration.From my experience LAUSD will not give you any information because if you know more you can request more.

I can answer part of the question regarding open enrollment. Schools with open enrollment change each year, because schools only offer open enrollment seats when they have more seats than neighborhood students to fill them. Open enrollment begins in late April or early May and the applications are due around Memorial Day. Admitted students are told the first week in June.

With LAUSD, you have a few levels to try to get answers from. You don't say your child is currently in LAUSD, but if he or she is, I'd talk to anyone at the current school that you have a good relationship with.

If your child is currently not at an LAUSD school, you can talk to the local district office and try to get information about schools in your district.
