We might be moving to the Palm harbor area and I'd like to know more about middle and elementary schools.

Specifically Carwise Middle and Highland Lakes Elementary. Does Carwise offer special programs for gifted children? Are they good?
As for Highland Lakes, do they offer a good program for LD kids? Has anyone had any experience with these schools? Also, by calling the schools, it seems that even though "choice" is gone, the placement of a child who lives within school zoning boundaries still depends on space availability for 09/10. Is this correct? I am getting conflicting information from different schools. Any input would be appreciated.

I first wanted to give you an update on the school "choice" decision in case you are not aware. The Board decided (on 1/13/09) to allow kids to stay at their non-zoned schools if they'd like (need to provide their own transportation). They feel confident that all the zoned and non-zoned kids can be accommodated. There may be a few instances where that is not the case but there are no specifics on that. That should mean that you should be able to go to your zoned school. The draft ES zones are on the pcsb.org website if you look for the Board meeting presentation.

I can also tell you that Palm Harbor ES will close for sure.

As for gifted programs, most ES schools offer a 1 day a week pullout enrichment. Leila Davis (and maybe Brooker Creek in the future) offer a full-time program for the gifted kids.

Some MS offer gifted math and science. There are 3 middle schools that offer the fulltime program - Dunedin Highland , Morgan Fitzgerald, and Thurgood Marshall. They are treated as magnet schools so you'd have to apply.
