In my child's elementary school, when a parent tells the school that they had lice, all the other students in the class ARE checked, and a note is sent home that alerts the other parents of what to watch out for.
Many people recommend using Tea Tree Oil (available at most pharmacy stores) in shampoo to get rid of lice, and keep them away.

When the staff is notified the school nurse gives all children in the class room a head check. Sends the students home with the information on what to do. If it is one or two children they will need to be picked up from school, we did that without embarrassing the child. Have children keep their hats, scarves, coats on there own hooks.
