Public Middle School Choices

chilepepper
Hello Everybody,
I am also new to this group. I am a military spouse currently living in New York but soon to be moving with my family to the Georgia area. I have a 12 yr. old son who is presently in the 6th grade. As you all can imagine another move for a child my son's age can be very tough, simply because he has to make new friends again, try to fit in, and leave his old friends behind. My husband and I have been researching the internet for information on the school districts/systems in and round the Bloomingdale, Pooler, Savannah, and Richmond HIll, GA . areas but I am really not getting the right information that I am looking for. For example, I would like to hear from the parents of the children in each of these locations. I would like to know which public schools you feel strive to serve the child best; academically, emotionally, and professionally? I could call the school themselves but I don't want to hear their School Philosophy Statement, I want upfront opinions.

We are a military family that just arrived in this area January 2009. My husband is stationed at Fort Stewart. We chose to live in Richmond Hill because of the great school district. It is very well regarded in the area, and they have the results to prove it. My son is in 5th grade (and I also have one in 1st) and he adjusted really well. We find the people here very friendly and we have been very happy with the school. Talking to people outside our district, public schools are not very good in the area and a lot of people choose private. Richmond Hill is a diamond in the rough. People move here just for the schools. We love it.

slcaper,
thank you for your thorough response. I have also found out that Richmond has the best schools in the area, private or magnet schools notwithstanding. For those of you still looking, Realtor dot com shows school ratings and it's not a bad place to start. I am not moving to Savannah after all, but good luck to you all!

Well from what I've always been told, Richmond Hill, Ga has the best school system ever.

As for elementary schools in savannah there are quite a few that I like with Marshpoint Elem being first, Heard Elementary being second.

Personally, the only middle school in savannah that would interest me is Oglethorpe charter school and Derenne Academy(in the honors academy)

My son is going to the 6th grade for the 2009-2010 school year and will be attending a private school.

chilepepper,
you are asking all of the questions I would like answers to also. We may be moving to the Savannah area soon. We currently live in the San Francisco Bay area and two years ago lived in the Minneapolis area, and 4 years before that in Miami. We have always chosen our neighborhoods by how good the public schools are and I can't find any good schools in Savannah. If you receive any information please let me know. Good luck in your search!

Hi chilepepper,

While GreatSchools is a nationwide site, we still don't seem to have oodles of members posting from any specific area.

Have you tried the "research and compare" feature located at the top of the webpage? You can compare schools or districts, and get parent reviews.

In addition you might find advice on how to handle the move and find the right school for your son by visiting the GreatSchools library here: www.greatschools.net/content/movingWithKids.page
