What about transportation from school on cold days?

Anonymous
We live in Caton Ridge (EAST), but 1 mile from the school. On very cold days, too cold to walk, but we don't have ability to pick up from school, even though someone is home. How do parents do it? Do kids really walk in frigid temps/snow to/from school when 1 mile away?? Does anyone else have this problem or has anyone resolved it?

I have back issues when walking in the cold...this could be because I had to do it when i was young, who knows, I cant help but wonder if it will get worse as i get older. My point is that, yeh alot of us may have had to do it when we were younger and were fine NOW but is it possible to develope problems later from it?! And even if they don't there are other issues, the only positive I see from having a kid walk a mile is the good excersice ...but what about the predators we keep getting notices on? And what if a kid has a low immune system do we really want them getting sick and missing school from walking home.

If you would like to contact me to help drive your children let me know and I'll give my information, I work 2 days out of the week but may be able to help drive them on some of the other days. Do they go to the elementary?

Does he have any friends at school who get a ride home that he could ask to give him a lift? Maybe offer the parent a bit of gas money if they are going out of their way or just as a polite gesture?

Growing up I had to walk home just over a mile every day, sometimes I got a ride from a neighbor or friend but there were plenty of days I had to walk home in unfavorable weather. There were times I had so many layers on it reminds me of the kid brother from A Christmas Story, I could not move my arms, bend over completely, and walked like a penguin. I am sure many of us did and we were ok. Kids are pretty resilient.
Make sure he is dressed appropriately for the weather and provide him with something hot and dry when he arrives home.
