Does anyone have advice on choosing a middle/jr high school for a student with ADHD in the Redmond, WA area?

coppelia
I have a 5th-grade son with ADHD; he is currently doing "okay" in elementary school due to his exceptional special ed. teacher and the involvement of his classroom teacher. I am really concerned about how he will manage in middle school/jr hi with the addition of much more homework and projects requiring more independence, organizational skills and time management than he currently possesses (almost none). I am also concerned about the social aspects of school, as my son is immature for his age and has few friends. I am thinking about taking a look at Stella Schola School in Lake Washington School District, but would love to hear about the experiences and advice from the parents of other ADHD kids in the Redmond area.

Hi, sorry for the late response! The headmistress is Brigette Tennis. We were really torn with what to do for 9th grade. There are options depending on your child but you can try and lottery into Int'l School for 1 year to see if he likes it. You can go to RHJH for the 1 year (we did) or you can go back to your feeder Jr High for 1 year. I would be happy to email me further if you would like to provide me with your email or phone number. Take care and stay warm!

Thank you so much for your reply; I would like to email you further, if that is okay with you. When I reread my initial post, I realize that I didn't explain my son does have an IEP--an excellent one, I must say. It's by far the best one he's had since preschool, and solely due to the efforts of his new special ed teacher and the complete evaluation I had done by a neurological psychologist 1 1/2 years ago.

One thing I am wondering about, is what you did for 9th grade for your son, since most LWSD high schools start with 10th grade.

Also, what is the name of Stella Schola's headmistress?

Thanks so much!

My son has ADHD and went to Stella Schola for 3 years. It was a wonderful environment for him and the headmistress has done amazing things with this school, and for the kids. She also has raised 2 boys with ADHD and really gets it! I also recommend a 504 plan for your son, wish we had known about this when he was in the 5th grade. Good luck!
