We're moving from Canada to South Denver from August 2008. I'm looking for a K-8 school.

My children currently attend a chartered gifted school and I'm hoping to keep them together in one K-8 school. They will be entering Grades 5 and 7. I'm not necessarily looking for a gifted school but rather a school that encourages creative learning and has music, art and physical education options. We are looking to move to a community within a 30 min. commute from the Denver Tech Centre. Another option would be an elementary school and mid-school which are located on the same property. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Aurora Quest academy and Summit Academy are both gifted program schools located in A.P.S. i which students usually go from one to other, as if it were a K-8 school.

Keep in mind that Colorado Gov't emplyees rate schools. However, also note that the program is by state, and certain things are inflated including test scores for the Colorado Student Assessment Program, due to being a self-run testing system. A recent state laws titled, The No Child Left Behind Act, is one such inflationary measure. www.aps.k12.co.us/assessment/Aurora%20Quest%20Academy%202008_0180_7232_E.pdf?cmdSelect=getReportCard&schoolID=39523&searchYear=2008

Current Application (of Enrollment) Deadline: apscms.net/calendar/2008/11/18/quest-k-8-accepting-applications-until-jan-16-2009/

All public schools are governed by districts; There are several school districts in the "Denver Metro." area. Aurora Public schools represents the city of Aurora. Most Aurora schools are very poorly rated. Even the gifted and talented school students, facilities, and teaching are much worse than some the eastern mid-west states like Ohio, or western states like California. www.aps.k12.co.us/district-info/schools.html will show you all APS accredited schools, but not necessarily all private / tuition charging schools.

The laws in CO changed in 1997 where you/your child can "choice" into a school out of your school district/attendance area. Truly it will depend on where in the city/metro area you decide to live. Also, of course, deciding public or private schools.

Just north of the Tec Center is Denver Public Schools, and there are only a handful of K-8 schools in the SE area. Slavens K-8 (slavens.dpsk12.org/). There is an IB/PYP (www.ibo.org) school (Bradley International bradley.dpsk12.org/) that is an ECE-5th, and the middle school is Hamilton (hamilton.dpsk12.org/) which has an International Preparatory Magnet program.

If you are on the south or east side of the Tec Center, it is Cherry Creek Schools (www.ccsd.k12.co.us/). To the west you will find Littleton Public Schools (www.littletonpublicschools.net/).

Thank you. I've spent a few hours in this site, and am having difficulty finding a school within the k-8 range that fits. A few interesting schools require residency for enrolment application and some school's admittance is decided by lottery. I will join the "gifted parents" group.
Thanks again,
Y

I'm not from the Denver area, but wonder if you've tried using the "Research and Compare" feature on the green menu bar near the top of this page? If you enter names of towns and grade levels, you might find some schools to start with. Private schools may offer Kindergarten-8th grade all together, but I don't know if that's what you're looking for.

Although I'm not sure how many more people from Colorado would see your question in this group, you might want to join other gifted parents at community.greatschools.net/groups/11537
