There is a book - Peterson's Guide To The Independent Schools - you should be able to find it at any library. Your yellow pages are also a good source of information on schools - the private schools are usually listed there.
Lab schools are most commonly found near to colleges and universities - give a call to the Education Departments of your nearby colleges and universities and ask them if they know of lab schools in your area.
yippiehappymom, how old is your daughter? Is she attending a public school? I don't understand why you were told your child has to be tested at a "hospital giftedness lab," because most schools do their own screening for gifted classes. What good would a hospital test be, if the school still didn't offer an accelerated program? I realize that not all schools offer gifted/talented classes, or they may not offer them until about 3rd grade, but the part about hospital testing is very odd.
Thank you for your informative answer. Yes I should have been more specific. Thank you for the advise. I will do as suggested and appreciate your time. I am dealing w/ a v.v. bright child - a "gets it the first time" kid. So bright that she's got compassion, intitutative guessing abut others feelings down too. This quaility prevents her from "showing off" . But if tested, they'd see, give her anything, she'll find it interesting, enjoy learing about it, laugh and giggle at the "big words" and then months later, still remember what was taught and assimilate that knowledge. She will make connections between that knowledge and new knoledge. Her "kindness" and unwillingness to "make others feel they know less" is what prevents teachers from finding out more. They admit she's v. bright, but they do nothing. I'm the only one who hears "I don't like school, we already did that". My problem is I don't have the funds to get her tested $1000.00. at the recommended hospital "giftedness lab" . Supposedly, this is the only test a parent pays for and then, if child is accepted, all costs are then covered, but the initial $1000.00 is the issue. What's worse is we look "middle class " on paper.... but due to dificulties w/ my husband, I can't get to the money to get her tested. It breaks my heart ... so, we have "fun" as I call learning at home. She leads the way. We have question of the week and she asks whatever she wants, then the rest of the week we together find the answers.
Thanks I will join the group "gifted" for starters.
Yippiehappymom, Greatschools is a nationwide forum, and we don't know where you live, or your daughter's age/grade...Have you tried using the "Research and Compare" feature on the green menu bar near the top of this page, where you can enter your location and grade level that you're interested in, and see what's nearby?
