I am so happy that you are concerned about this. Telling time on a an analog clock will give child a basic understanding of the ordinality and cardinality of numbers. (name and value)
Start by teaching her about the minute hand and the hour hand. Then teach her the o'clocks - 1 o'clock, 2 o'clock etc. Next you move to the half hours. These usually are the easiest to teach because you only have to learn the movement of one hand. Practice this for awhile. Next teach the quarter of and quarter after. Then move on to the minutes after. Showing that the minute hand counts minutes. Use the digital clock to show the equivalent times. Then you can expand terminology to include "minutes before the hour", and talk about am and pm. Children who understand the analog do better in math , especially in fractions!
Don't forget to buy your child an analog watch!
Good Luck!!

the technique that you know your child picks up or learns quickly with that's what you want to go with. My now 11 year old wanted to know what time it was about every 5 minutes...drove my nuts..i showed her with the clock on the wall, counting, also military time, each one i could think of now a days..i can time in spanish!..LOL

Here's a handy on-line clock you can use:

ttp://www.time-for-time.com/swf/myclox.swf

the same site also has lessons and games:

Also try this site - the clock stuff is way down under measurement.

Hi active-mom!

Teaching time can be tricky and frustrating at times. But hands-on and lots of practice will help the concept stick.

Here's a suggestion, does your child have a favorite television show? Perhaps when this show comes on at 4:00pm you put a clock by the TV and that might help him relate to seeing just numbers instead of the big hand, little hand.

Or another suggestion, once he understands the basics you could go to a store and pick out a pocket watch that catches his eye. Tell him its up to him to make sure your family always knows the time. Hopefully he will be excited to have ANY excuse to pull out that shiny watch and use it. It will help reinforce his time telling skills and every time he sees it, he can remember that special time you spent together.
