Yes, and no. Our public elementary school offers three choices on entree, at least three choices of fruit or vegetables and white / chocolate milk or juice.
My daughter doesn't care for the food she thinks is too salty. However, students and parents lobbied for a salad bar which will be installed in the next couple of weeks - lots of fresh vegetables, fruit, tofu, chicken, cheese, nuts and whole pieces of fruit as well. It's a bargain at about $2.75 with the opportunity for kids to learn about making healthy, good-tasting choices.
My daughter complained the other day that her milk was frozen and she couldn't drink it during lunch time, my older daughter complained that her food was cold not warmed enough and that other time, her food tasted funny, my other daughter complained because she is use to eat a lot and they only served her 3 pieces of nuggets with something else, she wanted more but they didn't let her grab more.
We have had a teacher complain about the cafeteria food - but I don't hear kids complaining. And I have to say Lily, our lunch lady, will feed any child as much food as they need to feel full and satisfied. If they have the money for lunch great and if they don't she feeds them anyway.
I'm not sure how she squares it with the district office, and frankly I don't care, just as long as all of our kids are able to eat lunch.
