Can anyone give me first-hand information about Baton Rouge International School?

Anonymous
I am considering sending my 2 children to BRIS, but would like to first have some feedback from parents who either have their kids enrolled there or did have their kids enrolled there. Is anyone available to discuss and/or provide some info?

My children are in Pre-K and the ELIC (2 years old). The international curriculum is amazing. I highly recommend that you go on a tour of the school. The following were my observations upon attending a recent "Parents Back to School" tour:

Kindergarten: Observed: English class, students are in group lesson working on grammar and developing sentences. Students who speak English only at home are beginning to use spoken Spanish and French.

First Grade: Observed: French class, students are responding in French. Textbooks are those used in France, language arts gets progressively more advanced by the end of the year as do student compositions. Students are learning to write in cursive script. Mathematics, science and other disciplines are taught in French, Spanish and English.

Second Grade: Observed: Technology class, taught in French. Students learn word processing, various applications of computers, Internet and developing a computer solution. Students use the computer to communicate internationally.

Third Grade: Observed: French class, students are fluent. Textbooks are those used in France. Mathematics is done differently in different countries. By learning math, language arts, science and other disciplines using Spanish, French and English methods, the student is nimble and knows several ways to approach a problem.

Fourth Grade through Eighth Grade: Observed: English class, students writing reflections on book about Hurricane Katrina. Teacher was working one on one with a student while the others read. These students are responsible, mature and enjoy challenges. They are creative thinkers and independently develop and implement ideas. Each has a community service binder in which they record their community service projects. According to the English teacher who is retired from the public school system, these students are two grade levels above their peers at other schools not to mention their fluency in French and Spanish and working knowledge of Chinese.
