My third grader cannot wear a costume during their in class Halloween party....

daseigh08
I recieved a note asking to check which of the lists of items I could provide for my son's in class Halloween party. My son, very excited, requested one of these items for me to check. THEN...he gets more excited about wearing his costume during the party:)...WELL, then after checking an item I had to explain that along with the list came strict underlined instruction of NO COSTUMES!!! I am very confused by this. My first grader in the same school can wear his costume and his older sister in fifth grade can wear hers. Why? Can anyone please explain why this could be?

It is unusual for some children in the school to be allowed to wear costumes, but not others. My son's elementary school had a "parade" around the building, which all parents were invited to watch and take photos, etc.
There are certain religions which don't approve of Halloween celebrations, so perhaps there's someone in your son's classroom who is sensitive to that. The only sure way of knowing is by asking the teacher and/or principal...

Ask the teacher. If the school has the same policy for all the teachers1-5, then it must be the teacher and his/her reason as to why your 3rd grader can't wear a costume. This does not make any since. Let us know what happens

You want to make sure why the teacher is not allowing costumes for her students. Kids get very excited to wear their customs during this day so they can show it to their friends at school.

Your child must be disappointed. Speak with the teacher and principal for details.

I think most schools want to keep the school environment safe to all students. Some of the Halloween costume may be a danger to your child
and other students. We do not do Halloween, but my children's schools permit a costume after the "last" bell.

Safety first and common sense imperative.

Halloween costumes should be saved for party time. There is enough going on in a classroom without the unnecessary distractions of costumes. Your son is of the age he can change into his costume. There are so many reasons - safety -being a huge one - that children not wear a costume all day. These are some of my initial thoughts. I think it might be helpful to get clarification from the school to best understand their policies.

Teachers are allowed to make rules for their own class. As a parent you have to accept that and help your son to understand it. Thats just the way it goes in life. Its possible the teacher has been doing this gig for a while and she knows how to avoid problems.

I was a teacher's aide last year and on Halloween you;d be surprised how many little princesses or Ninja;s or cowboys spent most of the day just SO upset because this or that was not right about their costume or some part of it wouldnt stay on... or that girl said I'm a prettier princess than you,,,

Halloween can be fun but school is school. Halloween can be celebrated after school or at weekend parties.

anne56..thank you for the obvious:) however, my confusion was "wearing his costume DURING the party", not "during"/all day! Thank you though!

daseigh08, we're wondering - what explanation did the teacher give you for her rule against costumes?

She explained it in terms of policy. Basically it has been a policy for the grade levels themselves, through meetings yearly, and suggestions, that 3rd grade does not participate with costumes. My 1st grader's teacher explained their grade level decided on a weeks worth of different Halloween activities, no costumes. My 5th grader's level decided on parties with option to wear a costume. My son was down on the idea of "no costumes", but all turned out well. His party was enjoyable even without them!! :)
