Mastermark,
How old is your son/what grade? I'm wondering if your son has had any difficulties concentrating in other situations, besides just having problems this year in school, with this one particular boy?

While a child making faces can be distracting, it sounds like something else might be affecting his grades. Often, children with attention deficits or learning disabilities have a difficult time concentrating and doing their work, and a child's description of "I'm trying, but can't control it" is common. You might want to look at www.help4adhd.org and see if the description of some of the behaviors "fit" the way your son acts...

Try having the teacher move your son to a seat closer to the front, while the silly kid sits behind a few rows back, that way your child would have to compleatly turn around to see him, sound like both the kids are sitting fairly close to each other in the same left or right eye view, so your child is easily distracted by him. I had this same issue with my now high school boy when he was an elementary 6th grader. It worked.

tell the principal about this other student who makes faces at him and distracts him.maybe they can remove the boy from the classroom to another class, that way your so wont be distracted anymore.
