Are the school's sensitive to military children?

colleenmerkins
We are pcsing to Schofield soon and I am worried about the schools. Has anyone had any particularly good or bad experience with a school regarding their children being military children. I am worried about my children feeling like outcasts and also the teachers not understanding their life, ie. deployments and frequent moves. Thanks in advance, Colleen

In my personal experience when I was a military kid, although part hawaiian and look white, it was hell going to school here in hawaii. Then, I married and hubby joined the military. We are stationed here in hawaii and I thought and gave benifit of the doubt things would be better. WRONG!!! Just as bad when I was a kid or worse. My children look more white than I do. So, my advise is to either home school, on-post schools, or send them to a private school that has lots of military children and have strict policies about how children treat each other. All I can say is that make the best out of your time here in Hawaii and don't allow the negative at school make your stay here miserable because then u are allowing the mean people to win!

I always recommend to keep your children in the military schools on post. They are the best adapted to handling military children and their issues/concerns. However, if you are unable to attend military school then the surrounding schools near the post would be the best. They deal with your situation yearly and are also able to deal with the needs of a military child. They are not the best but they do have an understanding because they do have other military children who attend their school. I say they are not the best because they do understand, however they do not have special programs or activities that on post schools will have.

There are assigned Military Liasons for each branch of the service. Please ask your service branch for a contact name and email address or you can find more information at this Hawaii Dept of Education's site designed for transitioning military families (militaryfamily.k12.hi.us/). Most schools surround the bases have a great transition program that specifically addresses a military family's concerns.

My children are older - In Middle School (Wheeler Middle School) and High School (Leilehua). Though I heard many horror stories before moving here I have been extremely happy with both schools and the education my students are receiving. Almost all the students in the middle school are military dependents and about a third of the high school

You are right to be worried about the schools here on Schofield. Both my children attend Solomon and I am ready to pull them out and homeschool them. Being military is no problem as pretty much everyone is military around here. However, the school itself is horrific. No progress reports, no books to take home for practice, no weekly schedule, etc. My son brought home the same sheet for homework on 3 different days within two weeks. Also, boith my children enjoyed school before we moved here, but now they cry and beg not to have to go to school, because of all the bullying, pushing and shoving and name calling that is going on at the school. Aparently Wheeler and Hale Kula are better, but I only know that from hear-say. Good luck with your PCS move.
