It's always important to check with your local school district for questions like this. As a nationwide community, we'll all have different answers depending on where we live. Los Angeles Unified schools actually do attend on Monday.

Check your school calendar on your school webpage. Because Christopher Columbus reached land somewhere in 1492 or thereabouts, Columbus Day is a day off for most schools. In CT, most schools are off.
I think that depending on what where you live. Most of my out of state friends claim their children are out of school on Monday due to Columbus Day. The city and state I live in is Chicago, Illinois. My children attend public school. Every year the schools send a Chicago Board of Education calendar that tell you the days are kids are out of school. I think the website would be alot of help for most parent that don't know.
