Personally we are looking into Lake Bluff right now for our 5 year old. Lake County is pretty large, what kind of area are you looking at?
Fremont in Mundelein was originally our first pick but Mundelein itself was too isolated for us. The Highland Park schools also seem to be good but it's too expensive for us to live there.
Lake Bluff works for us location wise and what I have seen of the schools so far is impressive - new building opening this summer, full-day kindergarten option, a lot of extra-curriculars available and small class sizes.

Mundelien worries me. More so the highschool - a lot of fights break out there and its not uncommon for the Police to be there. :/

Hawthorn district #73 has great schools. Your daughters would probably enjoy townline most. It is a really new school with great staff and lots of fun stuff to do. If your older daughter is in 3rd grade next year she'll get to play an instrument if she wants to. The playground at townline is fun for little girls too. Townline would be the best school for you in my opinion. townline.hawthorn73.org/

lake Zurich and barrington have good public schools. lake Zurich also has a ton of private schools. i would also steer clear of round lake and waukegan! i have heard a good bad mix about mundilion(sp?) and wauconda.

I would avoid Round Lake, Waukegan, and Zion schools. Due to budget deficits alot of extra curicullar activities have been cut.

My daughter is currently enrolled in Woodland and we're considering moving to Grayslake. I've had no problems with Woodland, and I'm still researching grayslake.
