My thoughts on what happened to teaching respect...
Start young, give alot of love however it is wise to also teach your child not to cling to you, cry when you go out of the room etc. When your child is young teach by example. When a child, teen show disrespect give a consequence and make sure they understand what they did and have them give you feedback, very important.

How do teachers handle this situation? Do they let it slide?

Thank you for your reply Corinne,

I added a new group to simplify this. The Not My Child Syndrome, also the title of my book to be released soon.

This is a broad question, Winetuscany. Can you narrow this down more?

This happens to be my area of expertise as I'm the founder of a program that brings social skills into the school system, and "respect" and consideration for others are some of the cornerstone principles.

There are a hundred answers to your question, depending on what you mean. I'd love to answer it specifically, but can you narrow the scope a bit?
