My 8 year old daughter has significant intellectual strengths and weaknesses. On the WISC-IV she scored:

Anonymous
VCI 134 99% :
similarities 18- 99.6%
vocab 14- 91%
compreh 15- 95%
PRI 115-84% :
block design 10- 50%
picture concept 16- 98%
matrix reasoning 11- 63%
WMI 123 94% :
digit span 12- 75%
letter-number sequencing 16 -98%
PSI 85 16% :
coding 6- 9%
symbol search 9- 37%
She has been tested twice for TAG program (once when she was 61/2 and again at 8 and 3 months) using the WISC by the school psychologist. Both times she followed the same pattern of significant highs and lows in the test results. The possibility of ADD was suggested by a doctor in July. Would her working memory score be as high if this was the case? I'm still trying to rule out any kind of LD. She performs well in school, although her writing and spelling skills have fallen behind those of similar intellectual ability, and she is starting to show signs of frustration in this area. Her reading and verbal skills are excellent. Anyone have any advice on what I should do next?

Coding and Symbol Search are the only two "pencil to paper" tasks on the WISC.... Obviously, they relate most closely to writing tasks in school. Does your daughter have any kind of hand or muscle weaknesses? I'm wondering if OT (occupational therapy) could benefit her, or if it's an actual processing deficit, and your daughter could be dealing with dysgraphia (disorder of written expression.)

Here is a great thread that has many links and information sources on ADHD in girls. You strike me as one that would be interested in learning more - so I'm passing it on. millermom.proboards107.com/index.cgi?board=Parenting&action=display&thread=2748

You'll may also want to repost your question while you are at Millermom. There are a number of members with experience in ADHD in Girls. They may be able to give you additional perspective.

Best of luck.

She had a psychological evaluation this summer where she was given the Detroit tests of Learning Aptitude and Visual-Aural Digit Span Test. According to the psychologists report based on the tests results and her observations of my daughter during the testing, she could not verify nor rule out ADHD at this point. So we are basically back to square one. According to the CBCL that I filled out this summer on my daughter, her behavior is entirely withing norms for girls her age . I plan on having her teacher fill one out after the second six weeks of school. I plan on researching the Connors and Vanderbilt rating form. Thank you for your advice!

My son has ADHD inattentive type and has a solid WMI. Your daughter's processing speed index is very low compared to her very high WM, verbal and perceptual reasoning skills. The difference between her VCI is significant in the statistical sense - a full 49 points.

Often, people with these kinds of splits have ADHD. But, WISC alone cannot be used to diagnose ADHD. Has she had any other testing in the realm of exectutive functioning? Have you completed a Connors or Vanderbilt rating form?
