Moving to GA from NY what are the schools really like?

jolu63
I will be moving to Columbus GA, from NY I am mostly concerened about the school community- what is it like-how do kids meet, hang out, behave, besides school? I will be moving in the summer of '09. I have a 3rd and 6th graders. What about special services (speech) will I be able to speak to teachers and staff before enrolling my child-do I have a choice of a school or is it based on where you live? Thanks

We are stationed at Fort Benning but live in the Lee County Phenix City area and the kids go to Smiths Stastion schools. My son started in 8th grade at Wacoochee Middle School and to my suprise he was accepted in this community as if he had lived here his whole life. He was happy and made some great friends. The nice thing about Smiths Station school is that 6th grade is called intermidiate school and they are in an evroniment where they are with 5th - 6th graders but start the process of changing teachers with a team of three classroom teachers who all teach something different. So they stay young for one more year, but they do a good job preparing them for middle school.
