Extremely shy 5 year old Kindergartner

Anonymous
My 5 year old daugher is extremely shy, she just started back to school K2. I want to make sure she makes friends but I know she wont make the first move, when i ask her who she played with last week, its always one of the boys. She does not like to share news on her schoolday so I have to drag the information out a lot. She is very sensitive, she gets upset easily and when she is upset, she says, you dont love me mommy which really hurts as I tell her always i love her even if i am angry with her, i will ask say Mommy loves you but I am angry right now for doing something naughty. I never label her as shy, and I always telll her i am proud of her when she does something good. How do i make her more confident in herself, I fell she lacks self confidence. my husband says she will grow out of this. She has a 3 year old sister, who is almost the opposite, happy does not whine as much and makes friends a lot easier.

My daughter was incredibly shy when she was younger. She wouldn't even look at people so speaking to them was never going to happen. She was like this with everyone- even people she had seen fairly often her entire life. When we put her into soccer, her dad had to coach as we knew she'd shut down if another adult tried to speak to her. When she wanted to try cheerleading, we gave it a shot. The class was fairly large so she wasn't singled out or expected to speak. A few weeks into the class, she was raising her hand when the instructor asked for a volunteer. The child did a complete 180! She is now incredibly outgoing, and we have to remind her not to speak to strangers.

I would suggest you find an activity your child really wants to try. Hopefully the fun and excitement will help them to overcome their fears and they will become less shy. Good luck to you, I know the position you in is very difficult.

My five year old son is shy too. He says that he gets scared in certin situations. He still gets shy around the same neighbors we've always had, around his best friends parents, his teachers, even his grandparents. He often makes the comment, "I'm too scared to say hello". Don't know how to get him more comfortable. He's in speech therapy at school, I thought he was shy since people don't always understand him. Even though he's a little easier to understand, he's not talking like I'd like and I too, would like to see my son gain confidence as well.
